What the Bible Says About Saving Money |
|
"...my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge" - Hosea 4:6
One of the best ways that I know to get knowledge, wisdom, and understanding is by reading from the book of Proverbs. An excellent habit that our Pastor suggested, and I've acquired is reading a chapter from Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters, reading a chapter each day works out perfectly. Just double up on the shorter months.
The book of Proverbs is one of the places that the Bible tells us to save money.
"Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow." - Proverbs 13:11
If the Bible tells us to save, there must be a reason. Notice that the verse above says little by little. There is power in starting with what you have and setting it aside. First, over time, this little that you are setting aside will provide a vehicle for you to invest. Investments leverage your personal resources. So, instead of you having to acquire money only by hard labor, your money will start generating income on its own. If you reinvest this income, you tap into compound interest. Compound interest is the reason that you won't pay off a credit card by making the minimum payment, but it is also the reason that it only takes 7.2 years to double your money at 10% interest instead of 10 years.
Second, saving money is an act of obedience that gives God something to bless.
"The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you." - Deuteronomy 28:8
We show our love to God through obedience.
"This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." - 1 John 5:3,4 I don't know about you, but this is good news for me. I can show God that I love Him, and experience His blessing at the same time. That's what I call a good God!
