Avoid Strife

Posted on 25 August 2009 by Shontta Stevens

Strife is defined as a bitter and sometimes violent conflict or dissension; it is an act of contention: fight or struggle. A synonym of strife is discord. Often, people make the mistake of diagnosing strife as anger. Anger can lead to strife and strife can lead to anger; however, they are not the same. Proverbs 29:22 says that an angry man stirs up strife. The Bible clearly makes a distinction between the two. So, the angry man has an Antagonistic Negative Guilt-laying Emotional Reaction (ANGER) to something thereby injecting a Stifling Tangible Recurring Influence that Frustrates Emotions (STRIFE).

A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.—Proverbs 15:18

Strife is stifling because it creates an immediate barrier between the parties involved; nothing positive is flowing through and neither side is able to hear the other. Obviously it is tangible because it can be felt and recurring because it keeps on coming. Strife negatively influences your decision making and frustrates your emotions. Recall a situation in which you are currently dealing or have dealt with strife and you will find that the acronym is an accurate portrayal.

If you have been married for any length of time, honeymooners included, you have had opportunities to get into strife. I used marriage, but this applies to all interpersonal relationships. The Blessing of the Lord (Genesis 12:2-3; Deuteronomy 28:1-14) requires us to live strife-free lives. Strife can limit or even bring to a standstill the flow of the Blessing.

And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle….—Genesis 13:7

Here we see an example of strife infiltrating what had been a prosperous business venture for Lot. Originally Abram wasn’t supposed to bring any family members along with him (Genesis 12:2). But since Lot was with his uncle Abram, he prospered. If you study this passage in Genesis 13, you will notice that it is a turning point for both Abram and Lot. Abram took the high road and allowed Lot to choose which way he wanted to go.

And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. —Genesis 13:8-9

Abram employed a key principle here to avoid and eradicate strife. He immediately found the source and severed the relationship. Thus, he continued to walk in the Blessing and Lot didn’t. When we find ourselves in this situation, we should go out of our way to avoid strife. I understand that there may be longtime friendships, business relationships or even relatives involved.  Apply Romans 8:28 to the situation, and make the tough call required to walk in the Blessing.

“But Shontta, I’m in strife with my spouse and children,” you might say. “Am I to sever those relationships?”  If there are no threats to your life or physical safety, you should seek out the source strife, expose it and work through it. Otherwise, seek professional help immediately. Once again, I’d like to show you how these blessing blockers affect your physical body.

Marital conflict can boost proinflammatory cytokines in the bloodstream and slow wound healing. These results add to the growing evidence that marital strife can impair both mental and physical health. While many studies have demonstrated the benefits of marriage in terms of promoting physical and mental health, what happens to couples who engage in verbal spats and power plays for years, maybe decades? One study, for example, found that unhappily married subjects were 25 times more likely to experience a major depressive disorder than were happily married ones. Another found that among women with coronary heart disease, marital stress worsened their prognosis threefold. And now a new study, published in the December 2005 Archives of General Psychiatry, has found that marital bickering can raise, in the bloodstream, levels of proinflammatory cytokines—that is, the kind of cytokines that sabotages healing instead of promoting it. *

STRIFE is tangible and it is obvious here that it penetrates and negatively works against your mind and your physical body. Don’t lose your life (John 10:10). Confront STRIFE with the Word and, if necessary, professional help. Keep the Blessing flowing. I am totally out of space. I trust you were enlightened and are now hungry to learn more on this topic.

Be blessed friends, and have the perfect day everyday!

Flexibility Brings the Blessing | Part 1 of 4

Posted on 14 July 2009 by Shontta Stevens

The current social and economic atmospheres are a breeding ground for a myriad of negative thoughts, emotions and actions. With so many people facing dire financial, vocational and family woes, you may find yourself “wishing” you were someone else, with someone else — living life in another person’s shoes. Simply wishing and daydreaming won’t change circumstances. But, being flexible can change everything.

And coupled with the Blessing of the Lord, flexibility can change your life. In Genesis 12:2-3 God not only told Abram that He would be blessed, but that he would be a blessing. And in Deuteronomy 28:1-14, God said that every thing they put their hands to would be blessed. What type of flexibility did this require? In both of these references God also commanded his followers to be flexible in their actions. The human being had to make changes. Abram had to leave his kinsmen. The children of Israel had to fully obey the commands He was giving them. Herein is where flexibility brings the Blessing. I’ve witnessed people hinder the Blessing in their lives because of a lack of flexibility in certain areas. I’d like to share some insight on these. Vocational, financial, mental, emotional and spiritual flexibility can enhance your daily life and perpetuate the Blessing no matter the environment.

Imagine a person full of life, movement and vitality who is suddenly stifled by arthritis or paralyzed in an accident. These circumstances would be quite dejecting to this individual who is now unable to move at will. The same concept is applicable to the aforementioned areas of flexibility. God said in Malachi 3:6, “I AM the Lord, I change not.” This verse identifies the fact that if we are going to walk with God we must be flexible — we must be willing to change. And God is so all-powerful that He causes us to become more flexible the more we conform to His will and ways. We become more like Him. This type of malleability cements us in the fact that acting on the unchanging Word of God brings us into unlimited ability and freedom.

Be blessed friends and have the perfect day everyday!

Will Serving God Make You Wealthy?

Posted on 14 July 2009 by Bill Tyler

The first part of Deuteronomy 28 leads me to believe that it is impossible to do the following and not be a wealthy person:

1. Fully Obey God
2. Carefully Follow ALL His Commands

Blessings for Obedience (Deuteronomy 28:1-14 NIV)
If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your God and walk in his ways. Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you. The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your forefathers to give you. The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.

Then, I thought, okay, so you get wealthy, couldn’t you just give it away?

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” – Luke 6:38

So, it seems that even if you give it away, it will keep coming back to you. I’m not sure why you would want to refuse God’s desire to bless you. Although many Christians say they don’t want to be rich, I don’t understand this thinking especially in light of why we get blessed materially. The reason God blesses us is so that we can be a blessing thereby bringing thanks to God.

You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. – 2 Corinthians 9:11

It all comes back to being willing and obedient. If we are willing and obedient, God promises to bless us. So, the question is, are you fully obeying God and carefully following ALL of His commands?

Stand Out with The Blessing

Posted on 08 July 2009 by Shontta Stevens

Is it possible to walk in covenant with God Most High and not stand out? I don’t believe so. According to the Word of God, it is impossible to fully obey the Covenant and not walk in the distinction of the Blessing (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Malachi 3:12 says that all nations would call you blessed and, verse 17 magnifies that statement by declaring that people would be able to see the distinction  between the people who serve God and those who do not. This is, of course, after the tithe is given to God. Fully obeying opens the door for distinction—He wants you to be distinguished! Are you standing out or fitting in?

James said a friend of the world is an enemy of God (James 4:4). Once you enter this Covenant, you acknowledge that God is the source of all blessing. You make a distinction between yourself and the world by connecting to that source. A covenant is defined as a written agreement or promiseusually under seal between two or more parties especially for the performance of some action. Another definition describes it as a formal agreement to fulfill an obligation. The distinction of the Blessing is manifested as you perform the promised action and fulfill your obligation—total obedience. God ALWAYS honors His side of the Covenant. It’s written in His Word and sealed by the Blood of Jesus. The Bible is clear in several places about the benefits of choosing to walk in covenant with the Lord. Let’s look at some of them.

“And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.”—Deuteronomy 28:10

“… for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord…” —2 Corinthians 6:16-17

“But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself…” —Psalm 4:3

And finally, possibly my favorite on this subject is Job 11:13-20. Here’s how The Message Bible says it, “Still, if you set your heart on God and reach out to him, if you scrub your hands of sin and refuse to entertain evil in your home, you’ll be able to face the world unashamed and keep a firm grip on life, guiltless and fearless. You’ll forget your troubles; they’ll be like old, faded photographs. Your world will be washed in sunshine, every shadow dispersed by dayspring. Full of hope, you’ll relax, confident again; you’ll look around, sit back, and take it easy. Expansive, without a care in the world, you’ll be hunted out by many for your blessing. But the wicked will see none of this. They’re headed down a dead-end road with nothing to look forward to—nothing.” Wow!

If that isn’t distinction, I don’t know what is. People seeking me out for the favor that’s on me! I sincerely hope that you would meditate on this and read it out loud to yourself. This is how those of us who walk in the Blessing are to live every day—distinguished and set apart!

Be blessed friends, and have the perfect day everyday!

When God Promises, He Delivers

Posted on 07 July 2009 by Bill Tyler

Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Jeremiah, what do you see? And I said, I see a branch or shoot of an almond tree [the emblem of alertness and activity, blossoming in late winter]. Then said the Lord to me, You have seen well, for I am alert and active, watching over My word to perform it. – Jeremiah 1:11,12 (Amplified)

Often when I share scripture with you, I’m learning to apply it my own life as well. While it’s easy to say that God will uphold His Word, it’s a different matter entirely to support this truth with our Faith and Conduct. If we really believe that God will perform His Word (and I mean every time), then, we must closely examine our own actions if our lives do not line up with His promises.

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act?Does he promise and not fulfill? – Numbers 23:19

It is clear from this passage that God will fulfill His promises. As an example, God has promised amazing results if we first, fully obey God and then, carefully follow ALL His commands. So, I must conclude that I’m doing something wrong if I’m not getting the results that He promised. Otherwise, I would be calling God a liar, and that is just not the truth.

So, here’s the challenge. If you are experiencing anything that is contrary to the blessings lined out in Deuteronomy 28, ask God to show you where you’re missing it. Then, when He does, correct it.
